Cork

An amazing gift from Nature!

The Story of Cork.

Cork is an amazing raw material, harvested from the Cork Oak tree (Quercus Suber) without damaging the tree. In fact, no trees are ever cut down as only the bark is carefully removed.

Harvesting helps regenerate the trees, contributing to their thriving life span of more than 200 years.

Choosing cork is saving our planet!

Cork trees naturally store carbon dioxide and every year cork oak forests absorb more than 20 million tons of CO2, reducing greenhouse gases. The cork oak forests also support one of the highest levels of biodiversity among plants and animals found anywhere in the world.

The trees will capture five times more carbon dioxide when harvested, so you are doing our planet a favour!

Portugal cork oak forests produce about 70% of the worlds supply of cork and the industry is carefully regulated to protect the integrity of the environment. Responsible harvesting creates high-wage seasonal jobs for thousands of workers.

Cork is harvested when the tree reaches about 25 years of age and then every nine years, but don’t worry the trees like it!

During the harvest, the bark is carefully removed by hand, no mechanical devices are allowed.

The harvested cork is left out for six months to improve the corks quality. No tanning is required, nor are any toxic chemicals used. Only natural water based dyes are used to create a variety of colours for cork products.

Cork is sustainable, 100% vegan, durable, recyclable and eco-friendly. Cork is also free from plastics, rubber and latex.

Cork is not affected by mould, as it is moisture resistant. Cork is also incredibly lightweight, because more than 50% of its volume is air.

Due to Cork’s unique properties, it is being used to make a variety of products- including handbags, wallets, toys, homewares and much more!
